“Mulan” is Heading to Disney Plus for $30

Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan” has been delayed multiple times this year because of the coronavirus outbreak.  However, audiences will finally be able to see the movie soon on Disney Plus.

(For those who are unfamiliar with “Mulan”, the film is a retelling of an old Chinese folk-tale about a young warrior princess who against all odds, brings honor to her family, and country.)

On Tuesday, Disney announced the classic remake would be heading to their streaming platform for an additional premium rental fee of $29.99. The film will be available on September 4th.

In markets where Disney Plus isn’t available, “Mulan” will play in cinemas.

Bob Chapek, Disney’s CEO, said on the company’s third quarter earnings call,

“We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this exceptional family friendly film to them in a timely manner.”

In addition, the CEO also stated, “We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience currently unable to go to movie theaters, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of the Disney Plus subscription with this great content.”

This epic film was orginally intended for the big screen: cinematography, sound, action sequences, props, costumes, and etc. Watching the film on your 70 inch TV screen does not give you the same experience as if you were sitting in a massive movie theater with a collective audience.

However, since the majority of movie theaters are closed in the U.S., is it worth paying the extra $30 to watch this blockbuster film in the comfort of your home with your family?

I think it’s worth the price. Rarely does our family agree on any film. However, “Mulan” is the rare occasion. With this family-friendly film, we will be able to sit together, and enjoy a memorable family night.

On a personal note, I am bit bias. My eldest daughter worked on the film in New Zealand. She was part of Weta Workshop’s amazing costume department. Weta Workshop’s creative team designed/created all the costumes, props, and armor for the film. The company’s craftsmanship is extraordinary!

What are your thoughts?….Do you already have Disney Plus? If so, are you willing to pay the extra $30 to watch the new live-action family-friendly film?
